Public Works staff can be depended upon whenever the weather is at its worst to keep our infrastructure functioning.

The City of Colwood Public Works team plays a vital role in keeping our city safe, beautiful and running efficiently by maintaining the community’s roads, sidewalks, traffic signals, sewers, drains, parks and City owned buildings.

Road Works

The City of Colwood is responsible for the maintenance of approximately 110 kilometers of road network. Our Public Works team is dedicated to maintaining and improving roads to ensure safety, extend the life of roads, keep our city beautiful, manage surface drainage and keep roads clear of snow and ice in winter weather. Snow Clearing

When the weather drops below zero, the Colwood public works team gets busy tuning up the snow clearing equipment and applying a brine solution as needed to keep roads clear of ice and snow. Roads are cleared in the following order: major roads, steep hills. connectors, school and playground zones, then local streets. Read more about Snow Clearing and Winter Weather Reminders. 

Drainage

Colwood Public Works has a regular drainage maintenance list to ensure key drainage locations are inspected and cleaned before, during and after heavy rains. Property owners can help by knowing where their property drains to and keeping it clear of leaves and debris. Also, ensure roof leaders direct water away from the house. A rain garden below roof leaders can be a beautiful and effective way to manage storm water on your property. See the CRD brochure on "Building a Rain Garden".

Roadside Mowing

Roadside mowing runs from late May through September each year. Scheduling of the routes is adapted to suit geographical efficiency, safety and sightline concerns, type of vegetation, ground conditions and environmental considerations such as wildflowers and fishery concerns.

Parks Maintenance

The City of Colwood is home to more than 50 beautiful parks and trails that residents and visitors enjoy.

  • Parks and selected streetscapes throughout Colwood are mowed and maintained on a regular basis. We strive to reach all parks as soon as possible in the spring. With the rapid growth and wet conditions, it can take a few weeks to complete the first cycle.
  • Playgrounds are inspected by certified inspectors weekly.
  • Trails, sidewalks and walkways are inspected and maintained every 2 weeks or as needed.
  • Each year in mid-August, the Parks team dedicates time to the Colwood Creek clean-up of garbage, invasive weeds and seasonal vegetation control.

Invasive Species

Invasive species of plants are those that have been introduced from outside of their native range and have the potential to negatively impact humans, animals and/or ecosystems. Read more about invasive species in our region.

Park Enhancements

We're always working to improve our parks and greenspaces. Current plans include improvements to the Havenwood Park Trail and Bridge, the Colwood Creek Park Bridges and the Devito Trail.

Beach Maintenance

Colwood is famous for its oceanfront areas. Our Public Works team keeps designated pathways clear and maintains the invasive vegetation alongside beaches. Beach logs are a natural condition of the foreshore and we do not routinely clear them in all areas. Beach litter and washroom maintenance are scheduled every week day morning and increased to Sundays during the summer months.

Yard Waste and Recycling

Public Works runs the City's popular Branch Drop-Off program. Not only does this program keep our city looking great, it diverts waste from the landfill and  protects our air quality by providing an alternative to backyard burning which is prohibited in Colwood.
