Canadian-born US doctor joins the Colwood Clinic medical team

A second family physician will begin taking on new patients at the City of Colwood's municipally-run medical clinic this fall. The Colwood Clinic opened its doors in January 2025. By June, more than 530 Colwood residents who didn't previously have a family doctor are now receiving health care at the Clinic, with more patients being added from the BC Health Care Registry every day.

Dr. Muthanna Yacoub will join the Colwood Clinic team in the fall. He grew up in Richmond Hill, Ontario and has been practicing medicine as a family physician in Colorado for the last six years. He and his wife have been keen to return to Canada, and the Colwood Clinic model and beautiful BC location were the right fit. 

"The core values I learned in Ontario are the ones I hold onto most strongly: keep a default position of understanding, curiosity and patience," said Dr. Yacoub. "I feel a lot of gratitude toward the communities of Canada because of it and want to give back to where I really feel is still home."

Dr. Yacoub's decision to move back to Canada comes after practicing medicine in the United States where extremely high fees have often been a barrier to patients receiving the care they need. He recognizes the experience has provided him with valuable skills in helping patients navigate the difficulties of poverty, addiction, violence and mental health, but he is keen to return to Canada and give back to the place he considers home. 

"I respect Canada's nationalized model of health care delivery," says Yacoub. "If the poorest can get high quality care to the same calibre as the rich, that makes philosophical sense to me."
