Electric Bikes and Electric Scooters
E-Bikes
E-bikes (defined by the law as “motor assisted cycles”) are power-assisted cycles that have a motor to help propel the device.
E-bikes must meet certain requirements to be legal for use on public roads in B.C. You do not need a driver’s license or insurance to operate an e-bike in B.C., but you must be of a minimum age depending on the class of e-bike. Read the Provincial E-Bike Requirements
Electric Scooters
Electric kick scooters are battery-powered devices with a motor and two to four wheels, a platform for standing and handlebars for steering.
In 2024, the Province established a 4-year pilot project to test electric scooter use in participating B.C. communities. Colwood is one of more than 20 participating communities.
A licence or insurance is not required to operate an electric kick scooter but you must be at least 16 years old and follow provincial rules and any set by a participating community. You can view the provincial rules in the Electric Scooter Rules and Safety Regulations
