Sign Permit

Sign Permits authorize new signs and the alteration of existing signs within the City of Colwood. Sign Permits are used to ensure that signage meets the bylaw requirements of the Colwood Sign Bylaw, 1988, and align with any previously approved sign plans.  

When is a Sign Permit Required?

A Sign Permit is required prior to putting up a new sign or altering an existing sign, except for the following exempt signs:

• Two unlit temporary signs of not more than 1.5 sq.m (16.2 sq. ft.) each or one unlit temporary sign of not more than 3 sq. m. (32.3 sq. ft.)
• Directional signs of not more than 0.4 sq.m (4.2 sq. ft.)
• Traffic control devices
• “No Trespassing” signs
• Site signs
• Window signs
• Signs erected by the City of Colwood, the Government of British Columbia, or the Government of Canada
• Signs authorized by Council resolution advertising a community event or authorized by agreement with the City for bus shelter signs.

Ready to Apply?  

To apply for a Sign Permit, submit the online Sign Permit Application with drawings of the proposed signage attached to the application. 

Review the steps below to understand how sign permit applications are processed. 

Image	Step 1: Submit Your Application Submit an online Sign Permit Application online and attach plans showing proposed signage. If attachments exceed 25 MB, documents may be sent separately by email to planning@colwood.ca
Image	Step 2: Application Review & Fees Staff will review the submission for completeness and issue a fee slip for the application payment. Refer to the Fees and Charges Bylaw, 1603, 2016  for applicable fees.
Image	Step 3: Technical Review Staff will review the proposal for compliance with applicable bylaws and previously issued permits. If required, applicants may need to revise and resubmit plans to address staff comments.
Image	Step 4: Permit Approval Once approved, the sign can be installed. Typical processing time is approximately 5–7 business days from the date fees are paid, provided no revisions are required.
