One way Colwood works to keep taxes low is by prioritizing services that matter most to residents’ safety, comfort, and enjoyment.
This summer the work of the Parks team has been concentrated on areas where people spend time — such as parks and trails — with lower priority placed on the frequency of boulevard maintenance.
Throughout July and August, staff time focused on park mowing, irrigation, trimming, trail maintenance, bridge repairs, washroom maintenance and waste management, as well as a series of park improvements, from new playgrounds and washrooms to a brand new park for people and pets.
As fall approaches, parks are being maintained at a level that allows staff to shift more time back to boulevard maintenance, starting with arterial routes. Generally, it is the City's responsibility to maintain boulevards on road medians and next to public property. Property owners, including homeowners, businesses, and schools, maintain boulevards along their own property.
Maintenance of the 70 cul-de-sacs is also scheduled for late September. As that work proceeds, staff will explore alternative designs that add beauty to neighbourhoods without requiring irrigation or intensive maintenance. This may include rock, pavers, or stamped concrete, along with hardy native trees or other plants that thrive in low-water conditions.
Did you know? Colwood is home to 78 parks (96.5 hectares of parkland). The Parks team performs regular maintenance in 30 parks throughout the City, including 14 km of trails, 228 garbage bins, irrigation systems, 26 km of boulevard beds and 110 km of forested boulevards.
