The Colwood Fire Department, in partnership with Royal Roads University, will be conducting a joint Wildland Fire training exercise at the Royal Roads property in Colwood on Saturday, July 12th between 10:00 am and 1:30 pm.
This exercise supports community safety in Colwood as part of Colwood Fire and Royal Roads collaborative partnership on emergency response and communication procedures.
About the Wildland Fire Training exercise
Colwood Fire Department’s emergency vehicles & staff will be using the lower loop and roadways connected to College Drive and Cottonwood Way.
Emergency vehicles and firefighters will be maneuvering throughout this area and firefighters will be deploying suppression hoses.
To minimize disruption, lights and sirens will not be activated.
Should a true emergency occur, lights and sirens will be activated to allow the emergency response to occur as per normal protocol.
Notifying the public
While viewers are welcome to observe the activities from a distance, we kindly ask trail users to give right away to the emergency vehicles navigating the roadways. Please use alternate routes between 10am and 1:30pm to ensure safety. Signs will be placed to advise trail users that the exercises are taking place.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as our teams work together to ensure our community is well prepared for wildfire events.
What you can do to help prevent wildfires
As our weather becomes increasingly warm and very dry, the risk of wildfires in our region is very real. It's important to stay informed and follow local rules. Most importantly:
- Dispose of cigarette butts safely, extinguishing them fully before placing them in a fire safe receptacle. In BC, tossing a lit cigarette butt can result in a $575 fine.
- Know that beach fires and open burning are not permitted in Colwood. Respect local burning regulations and Provincial camp fire bans
