Snorkel 57 is overdue for replacement!

This important firefighting apparatus has now completely exceeded the required replacement timeline set for fire suppression equipment. Due to the length of time required for the construction and delivery of a replacement elevating unit of this nature, it is imperative that steps be taken immediately to consider its replacement.

Colwood's population is projected to double by 2028 with new development in our City. Buildings under construction can be very vulnerable to fire hazards. It is critical that this piece of equipment is in top condition to protect our community and our firefighters as we enter this busy phase of development.

Approving the funding

At their meeting of April 14, 2014 Council approved the funding and tendering of a new replacement fire truck by way of a five-year lease renewable for a second five-year term through the Municipal Finance Authority (MFA) for replacement of Snorkel #57.

In order to be able to enter into such a lease agreement, Council is required to seek the approval of its residents through an Alternative Approval Process (AAP) which provides the registered electors of the City an opportunity to petition against Council's decision to fund the purchase through a lease agreement.
