Work is about to begin on stair replacement in Latoria Creek Park. A seacan has been positioned near the entrance to the park for supply storage, and there will be intermittent park closures over the next few months as the work proceeds. Effort will be made to safely maintain access to areas not impacted by the work as much as possible.

There are multiple long, steep staircases in Colwood's Latoria Creek Park, each with up to 112 stairs (great for a nature workout!). The first set of stairs is almost a kilometre into the park along a narrow forest trail with a deep ravine on one side where the creek flows, and rocky slopes rising steeply on the other side. The unique location adds complexity for hauling materials in to the work area.

A 2018 inspection revealed that several stairs were rotting and unsafe. At that time an assessment was done and it was determined that the supporting structure was also compromised. Temporary repairs were done to the stairs and staff began planning for replacement to ensure the long term safety and usability of the stairs.

The City was successful in earning a Canada Infrastructure Grant to cover 73% of the cost of stair replacement. The remainder will come from reserves set aside by the City for this purpose.

Connecting Latoria Creek Park to the Royal Bay Neighbourhood

As the Royal Bay neighbourhood grows, new connections into Latoria Creek Park will be created, and additional park space will be added. Below is a map showing the plan for parks and trails presented by the owners of the Royal Bay property to Colwood Council in July 2020. Nearly 17 acres of the South Latoria will be dedicated as neighbourhood parks, natural parkland, trails and greenways.
