New pedestrian activated crosswalk lights are being installed on Kelly Road near Herm Williams Park in Colwood to improve safety for pedestrians at this crossing.

It's one of several Colwood crosswalks where lights are scheduled to be installed in June. Two other priority crosswalks identified are Sooke & Metchosin and Latoria & Wishart.

While these upgrades are funded in part by a grant from ICBC, Colwood Council has committed to ongoing crosswalk improvements. The Colwood 2020-2024 Financial Plan includes budget allocation for crosswalk upgrades every year for the next five years.

It's all part of a new Go Colwood! program to improve how we move around Colwood, whether traveling on foot, bicycle, wheelchair, scooter, bus or car. Over time, Council will work to provide more transportation choices for residents and make it safer, more convenient, and more enjoyable to get around.

Watch for several upcoming initiatives, like measuring traffic congestion to complement current traffic modeling and expand the City's ability to make data driven transportation decisions; like promoting ride sharing to connect people who are traveling to the same destination; and like street, sidewalk, cycling and transit improvements. More information about enhancing mobility can be found in Colwood's Financial Plan and Strategic Plan.
