Based on a report that first went to Council back in July 2019, Colwood will move forward with a Request for Proposals for mobile food vendors to offer food for sale at the Lagoon Beach on Ocean Boulevard between May and August in coming years.

"While it may seem strange to be planning for activities that are not currently encouraged as we all work to stop the spread of COVID-19," said Colwood Mayor Rob Martin, "This is one of many small business building blocks that Colwood is putting in place to be ready for strong economic recovery."

Since 2016, the City has hosted Beach Food Fridays & Saturdays, a weekly event featuring food trucks and live music. The popularity of this event spurred many requests for more frequent regular food offerings at the beach throughout the summer months.

In January and February of this year, the City encouraged people to provide input on the idea of expanding food vending services at public sites around Colwood through a survey. Out of the 71 participants, 97% of survey respondents supported allowing more mobile food vending.

The project is considered a pilot study, with the possibility of expanding into other locations around the City over time. In the survey, the Lagoon Beach was the most frequent location listed, followed by Herm Williams Park and City Hall. Other suggestions included Royal Beach, Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre, and Colwood Corners however, these are not City owned lands and would therefore need to be initiated by the property owners in those locations.

Watch for more information to come as the Request for Proposals is issued, results are shared and the pilot project moves forward.
