The Colwood Public Works team will be adding a parking area at Colwood Creek Park, to provide 18 to 20 new spaces (with two designated for people with disabilities) near the entrance on Sunridge Valley Drive. Currently only on-street parking is available at this location.
The work is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, April 10, and may take up to two weeks to complete.
What's new at Colwood Creek Park
This additional parking will support new features at Colwood Creek Park. In 2017, the City added a Spray & Play splash pad to the playground area, and in 2018 there are plans to add a pergola that will provide a sheltered seating area where families can sit and visit or enjoy a picnic lunch. The pergola may also be used as a performance area for small musical acts, or for presentations, displays or a small market stand. Both of these added features were made possible by funding from Coast Capital Insurance Services here on the West Shore. (Read more about the Coast Capital grant.)
Benefits of permeable parking surfaces
The parking area will be created with a permeable surface of asphalt millings and gravel road base. Permeable parking surfaces provide many benefits:
- Drainage: During heavy rainfalls the City's sewer systems can get overwhelmed, while the ground around paved areas gets very little benefit from the natural irrigation. Permeable materials allow the ground to absorb water runoff and filter pollutants without costly manmade drainage systems.
- Winter safety: Ice does not form on permeable surfaces as it does on paved areas, making it a safer surface for driving and walking.
- Considering the environment: Using natural and recycled materials where appropriate puts less pressure on the environment than traditional paving materials.
