This presentation by author Alan Livingstone McLeod revives memories of largely forgotten men who were soldiers in the First World War and star hockey players from a long-ago time.

From Rinks to Regiments: Hockey Hall of Famers and the Great War. As soldiers, some were decorated for gallantry, some were killed in action, some were conscripted, most volunteered to serve. They are all fascinating, compelling characters whose hockey talents were such as to earn them an enduring place in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

It was the stories told by a great-uncle who survived the horrors of the trench warfare that seeded A. L. MacLeod's decades-long fascination with the Great War of 1914-18. His first book, Remembered in Bronze and Stone, is a cross-Canada journey among the bronze and stone soldiers of the country's war memorials. His latest book, From Rinks to Regiments, addresses a compelling cast of characters who were Great War soldiers and also star hockey players who would one day be inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The War Heritage Research Initiative Lecture Series explores various aspects of history, heritage, and memory of the world wars.  The Series will include a showcase the new ‘War Memories across Canada’ documentary vignettes, written, directed and produced by Dr. Geoffrey Bird, the project lead and associate professor at RRU.  In addition, we will welcome guest speakers throughout the year presenting on recent research.

Whereas war history is an essential cornerstone of this series, heritage and memory refer to the contemporary ways in which we remember and connect with the past.  A range of topics, including how we remember, forget, and silence the past, the invention of commemorative traditions, the traditions and relevance of how we remember, and the significance and meaning of war tourism are some of the topics we explore.

Please visit the War Heritage Research Initiative website for more information on the initiative.

The event is free but please register here.
