Hey Good Neighbour, thanks for stopping by!

Colwood’s Good Neighbour program is a resident-led effort to help neighbours connect and support one another, and to build resilient neighbourhoods. This is achieved by encouraging residents to get to know each other, largely through activities organized by a Good Neighbour Leader - this could be you!

Neighbourly connections help build trust, create a sense of connectedness and responsibility, and cultivate a sense of home, of safety, and security.

Encouraging people to get to know their neighbours allows them to share information, offer support, and feel connected. Engaging with our neighbours also allows us to take action as a community to address a host of complex societal initiatives.

Here you will find ideas and examples of neighbourhood activities you can do to strengthen your own community and be a Good Neighbour. Get to know your neighbours and help them tap into the benefits of connecting locally. Start building a community you all can trust and rely on. If you would like to learn more about Colwood's Good Neighbour program or have questions about becoming a Good Neighbour Leader, reach out to us at goodneighbour@colwood.ca

How Can You Connect With Your Neighbours?

Colwood believes that we can build resiliency through trust and social connectedness, and that will encourage lasting relationships among neighbours.

Here are some overall tips for Good Neighbour Leaders:

  • Connect with the City  Reach out to us at goodneighbour@colwood.ca the City's Economic Recovery Coordinator is available to answer questions about hot to get started with a new neighbourhood group and how the City can support with postcards and flyers to engage your neighbours.
  • Bring people together  The goal is to simply encourage people to think outside their homes and inside your community.
  • Have fun!  Activities with neighbours can be inexpensive, easy, and stress free. The goal is to have fun while connecting with new people.

How to get started:

  • Reach out to your neighbours  This can be done by simply spending some time outdoors where people walk by, or safely knocking on doors, calling them, placing a handout under their door or in their mailbox, or reaching out to them through social media.
  • Choose a way to communicate  This could include phone calls, video chats, email messages, or via social media.
  • Help us map neighbourhood groups  To inspire others, help us build a map of Colwood's Good Neighbour groups - let us know if you have formed a new neighbourhood group by emailing goodneighbour@colwood.ca. Many Colwood residents have a strong sense of belongining and we hope you feel the same way!

How to select neighbourhood activities:

  • Think simple  Activities can be free, easy, and stress free. Consider your time availability, and the space accessible for gatherings.
  • Ask for support  Ask around to see who else wants to be involved in an organizing role. More often than not, people want to be helpful, but just need to be asked.
  • Be open and curious  Take advantage of the skill sets on your block. There are undoubtedly many interesting individuals with lots of creative ideas.
  • Be persistent  If an activity is a bit of a flop, don’t get too disheartened. Try something else next time, or maybe adjust the time or location and try the same activity again.
  • Connect with community groups:
