Mayor Hamilton thoroughly enjoyed a  visit to Ecole John Stubbs this morning to take part in their morning video announcements. She was there to present a Colwood Pay it Forward award to Mr. Laurie's grade 4 & 5 students for their role in helping Colwood earn the title of Bloomingest Community in the Greater Victoria Flower Count again in 2015.

Students are our secret weapon

The kids cataloged blossoms and tallied blooms, working with both pencils and spreadsheets. Students are Mayor Hamilton's 'secret weapon' in the flower count, and she hopes that more classrooms will take up the challenge next year. It is a fun and interesting way for students to take their learning outdoors while practicing their math skills and adding to their understanding of plants and the nature of things.

Innovative Learning

Mayor Hamilton was also impressed with the John Stubbs students who put on a video show each morning to deliver the morning announcements, which is projected into all the classrooms. It was wonderful to see them assuming their roles: the announcers, camera operators, and sound technicians. It is encouraging to see the many innovative learning opportunities our students have with everything from outdoor learning through the flower count to leading edge technology for live video presentations.

A special thank you to Mr. Laurie and his students, but also to all the teachers and students whose energy and enthusiasm make our community an excellent place to live, work, learn and play!
