We are very grateful for Measuring Up and the funds that allowed us to partner with the City of Langford,
City of Colwood, District of Highlands, District of Metchosin and the Town of View Royal to implement one accessibility improvement in each municipality. For more information on Measuring Up, click here.
- I.A.C.D.I. believes in the value of partnerships so that we can continue to make more accessibility

News from Our Networking Partners
- From CRD Parks-CRD is in the process of developing a new web site. Usability and accessibility for people who are visually impaired will be considered and it was included as a requirement in CRD’s RFP and contract. Regional Parks and the Ministry of Environment, Fish and Wildlife Branch are in the process of installing a fishing float (accessible) at Durrance Lake at Mount Work Regional Park (similar to the one at Elk /Beaver Lake Regional Park). This initiative is one that MOE and others are actively working on and involves installing these floats at many fresh water lakes on the south island. Durrance Lake has been identified as a high priority for increasing urban lakes fishing opportunities. Durrance Lake is stocked with catchable Rainbow Trout.
- From the City of Langford-The wooden play structure at Centennial Park was in disrepair and had become a safety hazard not conforming to CSA Z614 Canadian Playground Safety Standards. Our Parks Staff at the City of Langford have designed a new playground plan and it was decided then to make the park more accessible for children with disabilities. In addition to a new playground structure, a rubber pour-in-place safe-surface was chosen along with brick pavers and an "accessible" picnic table. This provided wheelchair access. A grant from Tire Stewardship BC was applied for and received for playground surfacing at the park. IACDI provided a support letter for this grant application. This grant will pay for 59% of the playground surfacing cost of up to $30,000. The total cost of this projects, including new pathways, surfacing, play structures, picnic table, new fencing and a bike rack is approximately $126,000.
- BC Coalition of People with Disabilities (BCCPD) Community Update. Changes to Rules on Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) Withdrawals Effective January 30, 2013. For more informtion, please click here.
Outdoor cycling sessions start June 6 and run every Thursday @ 5:30 at Ring Road, U Vic New and experienced cyclists welcomed and coached by Peter Lawless. It is a 2km ring with minimal traffic so you can just ride or have specific goals for each session. If there are any wheelchair racers this is a great opportunity to tag along. We have experienced racers who are now cycling to offer guidance. Looking for a little cycling racing? Every Tuesday night out in Sidney are Time Trials and all para-cyclists are welcome.
