Lagoon Sewers
A new approach could LOWER SEWER TAXES for almost all residents of this neighbourhood.  To make this change happen, a majority of property owners have to petition the City asking for this.

More than 60% of all properties have signed petitions.  These properties comprise more than 60% of the assessed values in the area.  The threshold in both cases was 50% plus 1.  A bylaw will go forward to Council at the next meeting to create the Tranquility Local Service Area for sewers.

To read the presentation made at the meeting on 6th January, 2010 at John Stubbs School please click here.  To find out what your property would be assessed at under this property tax scheme please contact the Finance Department at City Hall.  For any other information please contact the City Engineer by email or by phone (250-478-5999) at City Hall.
If you missed the first meeting there will be another one Wednesday January 13 at 7:00 p.m. and a third at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, both at City Hall.  Check this website for updates.
For a copy of the petition with all your property information already completed, come to City Hall or watch for your copy in the mail.  To download a copy of the petition please

Esquimalt Lagoon Bridge Closed Completely Until Further Notice
Erosion of the approach ramp on the north side of the bridge has completely undermined an area of asphalt forcing the closure of the bridge to northbound traffic.  Unfortunately, vehicles continue to cross the bridge in the wrong direction despite ample signage and frequent enforcement.  Therefore, for the safety of everyone, the bridge will be completely closed to vehicular traffic starting Wednesday, February 3, 2010.  Pedestrians and cyclists will still be allowed to use the bridge for now.  Drivers can park on the side of Ocean Boulevard near the bridge and walk across to enjoy the peninsula.  Drivers should be aware that there is limited ability to turn around in that area.  Alternatively it is possible to access the peninsula via Sooke Road, Metchosin Road and then Lagoon Road.

Council is considering the issue of repairs to the approach ramp but Council is aware that the substructure of the bridge itself is near the end of its useful life and that Coburg Peninsula is eroding at an alarming rate.  Only by fixing all three of the problems can there be any expectation of keeping Ocean Boulevard open to through traffic for more than a few years.  The solutions to all three of these problems add up to a number in the neighbourhood of $10 million.  For more information please contact the City Engineer at City Hall..
