COLWOOD, BC – Each year, the Real Estate Foundation of BC (REFBC) chooses three Land Award winners for outstanding work to promote sustainable land use in British Columbia. Solar Colwood is this year’s public sector winner, in recognition of the program’s leadership, innovation, and collaboration to reduce energy use and create clean energy solutions.

“It is truly an honour for our small but mighty City to be recognized for its contribution to sustainable land use in BC,” said Colwood Mayor Carol Hamilton. “We accept this award on behalf of the many forward-thinking community members and partners who are leaders in making Colwood a resilient, healthy community and natural environment.”

By collaborating with 14 partner organizations, Solar Colwood has brought the community together to reduce energy use for homes and businesses. The program has been remarkably successful in demonstrating whole community change. Residents and business owners have become “energy champions”, making hundreds of energy saving changes, from simple energy efficiency upgrades, to installing solar hot water systems and other energy saving devices.

The REFBC judges praised Colwood's ability to partner effectively with numerous organizations, including business associations, academic institutions, governments and First Nations. This model is influencing other municipalities that are seeking ways to reduce energy costs and invest in renewable resources.

"Tonight's award recipients should be proud of the vision, creativity and collaboration that were hallmarks of these projects," said REFBC Chair Kelly Lerigny. "The Foundation is pleased to shine a spotlight on the exceptional work done by each winner and to recognize the commitment all have demonstrated towards sustainable land-use practices."

The Solar Colwood program also recently received a Community Excellence award and a Climate and Energy Action award at the 2013 Union of BC Municipalities, was named an official Canadian Solar City and was a finalist in the World Wildlife Federation’s Earth Hour City Challenge.
