Candidates for Colwood Mayor

Carol Hamilton

I have lived in Colwood for nearly 35 years and enjoyed the challenges and rewards of serving as Mayor for the past 3 years.

I will continue to provide strong leadership in reaching out to residents and working with all of Council to better the City of Colwood. There is no “I” in my vision of the team that is Colwood City Council.

I will continue to respectfully work alongside citizens, Council, staff and other parties toward a plan for our ‘waste water’ that is financially affordable for our taxpayers.

I will support the vision of the people through our recently revised Official Community Plan, including arts & culture, food security, transportation, and the environment, to ensure that we truly can “Live, Work and Play” here in the City of Colwood.

Our future requires economic viability, diversity and sustainability. This includes exploring opportunities to work with other municipalities on ways to increase efficiency and fiscal responsibility in the Capital region.

Achieving our vision of a vibrant, connected and soulful community will take a strong commitment to fiscal responsibility. We need to tighten our belts and carefully manage our finances.I believe my past experiences in 32 years of building our family business, raising a family, surviving the economic crisis of the early 80’s and overcoming personal family tragedies has strengthened my values. Let's work together to build a strong and propserous Colwood.

I believe in self government. I see the waste of that other form of control. In the 13 municipalities budget of a billion dollars is a huge waste. Most actions are unnecessary and a burden on limited resources. One vote makes a difference. I will cancel this inept form of government and focus on resources. The land is what we have to stand on and where we get our substance. The community is where our focus should be. I stated that I have a great garden where I live and that if any candidate can show me a more competent form of direction I would listen to them. However I do not think that is possible. Vote with your shovel.

We live in an increasingly sophisticated world - where politicians are plainly incapable of solving our past problems, nevermind the uncertainties before us.

Yet we are a city with an enormous span of knowledge and expertise. We can harness our collective knowledge and replace our political system by using our tablets and smartphones to design, review, collaborate vote on and create the best most elegant, attractive, cost effective and ecologically sound solution, not just to sewage, but to every problem we face as communities. We can solve our problems more elegantly and with greater agility (especially emergencies) by working collectively.

And when we do build that collaborative system, we will have created not merely a direct participatory democracy, but a dynamic aggregate of our collective intelligence; a political system where our talents can be contributed to our collective benefit.

+ citywide wifi for civic contribution to problem-solving and voting; for access to academic publications, and to integrate emergency services.

+ direct, participatory democracy with accountability through property taxation, and the option to contribute skills for executing our elected solutions in lieu of property tax.

We must demand these of all candidates.

Candidates for Colwood Council

Lilja Chong

It would be an honour to represent you as one of your six Colwood councillors. For those who don’t know me, I am in my last year at the University of Victoria completing my Bachelors Degree in Political Science and Hispanic Studies.  I grew up in Langford and here in Colwood, and I love it! I have worked in the West Shore community since I was 15. You may recognize me as a former manager at McDonald’s or door knocking for fundraisers. Like you, I am a member of this community wanting to be heard.

I represent an enthusiastic, younger generation of people getting more actively involved in local politics in Greater Victoria. I want to see action. We need to put projects in motion and see visible improvements.

Financial prudence and managing taxpayer dollars better are high priority issues. We need to promote investment and job creation so there are opportunities for young people to work in Colwood once they leave high school, and need positive changes to bring our ideas forward respectfully.

I can bring new energy and new ideas to the table but I am not in this alone. Let me be your voice and let us share a prosperous and sustainable Colwood.

A Colwood resident for 27 years, I'm committed to understanding the issues from the ground up. I support community involvement and championed webcasting council meetings for transparent governance.

CRD asked us to pay up front for sewers that most could not access. I've visited four plants with options for a local system that's affordable, expandable, and environmentally superior. I work hard to bring good value for money to Colwood.

Supporting local business, our first hotel and the development of a business case for a Performing Arts Centre, I am committed to a vibrant city!

Collaborating with IACDI, West Shore Parks and Recreation and CRD Parks, I'm pleased to showcase our free, award winning 'User Friendly Trail Guide' promoting accessibility and inclusion.

Programs at Pacific Centre Family Resources and West Shore Parks and Recreation reduce the burden on police and increase safety, helping protect youth from exploitation. I'm committed to keeping Colwood affordable for families.

Find out what I'm working on through Facebook and Twitter. Please vote and be involved in your democracy!

As I make my way through the municipalities that make up the West Shore I wonder what happened to Colwood.  And for that matter, as I am often asked by visitors to our community, where is the town of Colwood?  Is it no more than the jumble of businesses that line the Old Island Highway?  Colwood is slowly rusting, literally if we look at the failed developments.

Current council’s decision to retain control of sewage treatment for our community is laudable.  However I am concerned that at times council lacks focus. Raise your hand if you really think a solar initiative makes sense in our climate.

Over the next four years Colwood needs to; get taxes in line with services, encourage viable businesses to establish in our city, and continue to show leadership in the management of our sewage treatment. And if we find a magic wand laying around, deal with the Colwood crawl.

I envision my role on council as supplying a focused, personal agenda free, straight forward voice toward achieving those goals.

Natalia Lebedynsky Pro Amalgamation Party

Born in North York, Ontario now part of Greater Toronto.

Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Toronto:   Criminology, Sociology and Ukrainian.

Married to Chris who serves in the Canadian Forces and have a son Andriy, who attends St. Patrick’s Elementary School in Oak Bay.  Please refer to my Biography at:  www.proamalgamation.ca.

I would like to see better regional governance; more efficient use of tax payers’ money and I want to make Colwood part of a better and stronger community. Colwood council has refused to ask its’ citizens if they want to see how Colwood and the CRD might improve the way they are governed.  If you agree that we should take a closer look at how this region is being governed - vote Pro-Amalgamation. This will convince the provincial government to fund a study to see what options there are to improve and reduce the amount of bureaucracy in the CRD.  I would like to see increased levels of efficiencies, co-ordinated processes, create cost savings and investment opportunities. My hope is to represent Colwood as a leader and a voice at the table to build a stronger future we can all be proud to leave our children.

Duane MacNeill

I have resided for  27 years in Colwood, and  I want to build on the success of the last 3 years in the areas of transportation planning & economic diversity and to enhance the living experience we have now.  I will work with developers that want to define Colwood as a green place to work, live and play.  I will support our move forward on local sewage treatment, partnering with other municipalities.

The last 5 years attending Council, budget and committee meetings have given me the insight to truly be a representative of the citizens. I am fiscally conservative with a goal to keep budgets to the rate of inflation. I will continue to be open on any issue as your councillor, NO person will feel left out. I am committed to you the citizens of Colwood and I hope I can count on your support.

If elected I ask that you the voter, participate on our committees and meetings. Citizen participation is a priority in the next 4 years. Colwood it’s our time, let’s do it together...on November 15th vote DUANE MACNEILL.

Terry Trace

I am a retired Colwood resident, who has lived in Colwood most of my life.  I am running for Council because I feel it is time for me to step up to the plate and use my many years of senior municipal government experience to give back to the community I grew up in.

My experience working alongside Mayor and Council and attending Council meetings has given me the opportunity to understand what it takes to run a municipality and what is required to be a Councillor.  I will work hard at maintaining good relationships with Council members, committee members staff and the general public.

I understand how important it is to listen to the concerns and opinions of the general public, to have an open mind and for Council to clearly understand all issues prior to making an informed decision.

I enjoy living in this beautiful city of ours and support sustainable growth, more parks, bike lanes and trails, a study on amalgamation, a better commuter system and "the right" sewer solution for Colwood.

I hope to have the opportunity and look forward to working hard for Colwood to make Colwood a better place to live.
